TrainerRoad Finally Integrates with Zwift

In a move long awaited by indoor cycling enthusiasts, TrainerRoad has launched its integration with Zwift, allowing users to follow structured training plans while riding in Zwift’s virtual worlds.

Cycling

The integration leverages Zwift’s Training Connections API, announced about a year ago. This API enables third-party training platforms to send workouts directly to Zwift, creating a seamless experience for athletes who want the best of both worlds.

How It Works

Users with accounts on both platforms can now sync their TrainerRoad training plans to Zwift. When you start a workout, Zwift automatically receives the interval structure from TrainerRoad, controlling your smart trainer’s resistance while you pedal through virtual landscapes.

This addresses a common complaint among serious cyclists: TrainerRoad offers superior training science and adaptive plans, but its interface is clinical. Zwift provides gamification and social features, but its training plans lack the personalization of TrainerRoad’s algorithms.

The Catch

You’ll need subscriptions to both services. With Zwift recently raising prices to $19.99/month and TrainerRoad costing $19.95/month, the combined expense adds up. However, for athletes serious about improvement, the combination may justify the cost.

Industry Context

This partnership comes as competition intensifies in the indoor cycling space. Training Peaks Virtual has emerged as a new competitor, and Rouvy recently acquired both BKOOL and FulGaz, consolidating the market.

For now, the TrainerRoad-Zwift integration represents the best available combination of structured training and virtual riding entertainment.
