Cross Koksijde 2023 Race Results and Highlights

Cross Koksijde has gotten overlooked by American cycling fans despite being one of the most brutal races on the calendar. As someone who’s watched this race evolve over years, I learned everything there is to know about why the sand dunes matter. Today, I will share it all with you.

Cycling

That’s what makes Koksijde endearing to us cyclocross devotees — it separates bike handlers from everyone else.

The Sand Problem

Probably should have led with this section, honestly — more than half the course is deep sand.

Riders can’t stay on their bikes through most sand sections. They dismount, shoulder the bike, run through dunes, remount on the other side. Repeat this dozens of times per race. Legs burn from running while lungs scream from the effort. Technical skill means nothing if you can’t run in cycling shoes.

2023 Race Conditions

But what made 2023 different? In essence, mild weather kept the sand dry and loose — the worst possible combination for traction.

I’m apparently in the camp that prefers watching sand races over mud races. Frustrated by how mud obscures technique, I appreciate that Koksijde exposes exactly who prepared properly.

Men’s Race Breakdown

Five riders broke away early. The sand took its toll immediately — several falls, a few mechanical issues, gaps forming between the optimistic starters and the patient racers.

Two riders fought it out in the final laps. One pulled ahead during the penultimate lap on a grass section, then held position through the final sand sections. His running ability through deep sections made the difference.

Women’s Race Dynamics

A large lead group stayed together through early laps with everyone watching, waiting for the right moment. Two favorites pushed pace mid-race, whittling the group down to a handful.

The decisive attack came on the sandy ascent during the final lap. Mastery in the sand allowed extending a lead that held to the finish.

Equipment Choices

Tire selection proved crucial. Most riders used aggressive treads with lower pressure for sand grip, sacrificing speed on hard sections. Bikes were lightweight but built to survive repeated sand impact.

Some experimented with different wheelbase lengths and head angles. Gearing emphasized efficient power transfer over the challenging terrain.

Why This Race Matters

Koksijde serves as a proving ground for emerging talent. Equipment innovations developed for these sand dunes trickle down to amateur cyclists eventually.

Making the Call

Cross Koksijde remains the ultimate test of cyclocross versatility. Sand demands running fitness, bike handling, equipment preparation, and mental toughness simultaneously. Few races expose weaknesses so completely.
