50mm Tires Are Now Standard on Gravel Bikes

Gravel Bike Tires Hit 50mm

If you’ve been riding gravel on 38mm or 40mm tires, you might be behind the curve. The 2025 gravel racing scene has seen tire widths balloon to 50mm and beyond.

Just a few years ago, 40mm was the maximum clearance on most gravel frames. Today’s bikes routinely clear 50mm, with some accommodating 60mm rubber.

Why Wider?

Wider tires run lower pressures, improving traction on loose surfaces. They also absorb more vibration, reducing fatigue on long rides. At the front of gravel races, competitors have discovered that the grip and comfort advantages outweigh any minor rolling resistance penalties.

Frame Design Changes

Bike manufacturers have responded by widening chainstays and fork clearances. The once-clear distinction between gravel bikes and 29er mountain bikes continues to blur.

What This Means For You

If you’re shopping for a new gravel bike, prioritize tire clearance. A frame that maxes out at 42mm limits your options. Look for at least 50mm clearance to stay current with evolving tire technology.

For existing bike owners, check your frame’s maximum tire width. You might have more room than you think, especially if you’ve been running the same 40mm tires for years.
