Canyon Launches Direct-to-Consumer Trade-In Program

Canyon launched a trade-in program for used bikes this week, letting customers exchange their old rides for credit toward new purchases.

The German direct-to-consumer brand is accepting trade-ins from any manufacturer, not just Canyon bikes. Customers photograph their current bike, receive an instant quote, and can apply the credit immediately to a new Canyon purchase.

Trade-in values range from 10-40% of original retail depending on age, condition, and model. High-end road bikes and recent model years command the best valuations, while older aluminum frames receive modest offers.

The program addresses a real pain point in the cycling industry. Selling used bikes through marketplaces takes time and effort. Many riders delay upgrades simply because dealing with their current bike feels like too much hassle.

“We looked at how the automotive industry handles trade-ins,” said Canyon’s commercial director. “Simplicity matters more than extracting maximum value for most buyers.”

Canyon handles everything from pickup to refurbishment. Traded bikes are either refurbished and sold through a new outlet store or recycled responsibly if beyond repair.

The program launched in Germany and the UK first, with US availability expected by March. Initial reports suggest the online valuation tool is conservative but accurate—the quote you see is what you get.

For riders eyeing a new Canyon, this removes one barrier to pulling the trigger. Whether the valuations are competitive enough to change buying habits remains to be seen.
